I had quite the weekend lined up for this Chicago trip. I was launching another business and chose to celebrate the occasion in style, kicking things off with Oriole, then Alinea, Smyth, Mako, and finally Indienne — five restaurants in five days. I arrived in Chicago late in the evening, excited not only for the meals ahead but also to shoot with my new fixed lens (Sony FE 2.5/40G) for the first time. Apologies in advance if a few photos didn’t turn out quite right.

As I headed to Oriole, there was a quiet air of anticipation. I had heard nothing but glowing things about Noah Sandoval’s restaurant. The building had the charm of another era — understated, a little mysterious. I actually had trouble finding the entrance at first, but that was quickly resolved. I was greeted by a young woman who seemed new to the role — warm, attentive — and she pointed me toward the old service elevator. It caught me by surprise. What an entrance.

We were given a buckwheat tea to start, much needed to wash away the chill of the night. Then I was led to the bar, where I was welcomed with a complimentary sake (Fukucho Seaside) and champagne. I ordered a half bottle of 171eme Krug ($200) to keep things balanced — I had a full day of work ahead, I couldn’t get too crazy.
