Boka was a last-minute decision, spurred by the fact that I found myself in Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day — one of my favorite cities to celebrate the occasion. We managed to snag a 22:00 reservation and headed out. Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos from this meal, as I kept it light: two appetizers and Boka’s signature duck as my main.

Tucked into the heart of Lincoln Park, Boka is nestled in one of Chicago’s most charming neighborhoods, just off Halsted Street. The area offers a balance of quiet residential streets and lively restaurants, making it an inviting setting for a fine dining institution that has held a Michelin star for over a decade. The front of house was warm and welcoming, though service from our specific waiter fell short — surprisingly inattentive compared to the otherwise polished hospitality. The venue itself was beautiful, with a modern yet cozy design that blends Chicago chic with neighborhood intimacy. I do feel I need to revisit Boka to give the full menu a fair assessment, but for now, here’s how the food played out.

Chicken Liver Mousse with Sour Cherry, Brioche, and Hibiscus
The mousse itself carried the dish — rich and silky — but unfortunately it left little room for the other components to shine. The brioche and fruit elements felt secondary rather than harmonious. (6.8 /10)

Beausoleil Oyster with Raspberry, Espresso, and Thai Basil
An intriguing concept, but one that lacked balance and cohesion. The flavors clashed more than they complemented, leaving the oyster itself overshadowed. (6.4 /10)

Aged Duck Breast with Sour Cherry Reduction, Duck Heart Sausage
Boka’s signature dish and for good reason. The duck was cooked to absolute perfection, with a crisp skin that could stand on its own. The sour cherry reduction provided depth without overwhelming, and the rustic duck heart sausage on the side was rich, savory, and memorable. A true highlight and a dish worth returning for. (8.5 /10)
